Purpose
To assess the effect of candesartan vs amlodipine on carotid artery intima-media thickness in hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes
Study design
Randomised, double-blind, parallel-group
Follow-up
Aim 3 years
Patients
209 (100 candesartan, 109 amlodipine), mean age 59.7 ± 8.5 years, with HbA1c ≤ 10%, SBP 140–180 mm Hg, DBP 90–109 mm Hg, fasting total cholesterol < 250 mg/dl, LDL < 160 mg/dl, triglycerides < 400 mg/dl and carotid artery intima-media thickness 0.6–1.2 mm
Treatment regimen
Candesartan cilexetil, 8 mg/day, or amlodipine, 5 mg/day, increased to candesartan, 16 mg/day, or amlodipine, 10 mg/day after 4 weeks if SBP ≥ 130 mm Hg and/or DBP ≥ 85 mm Hg. Hydrochlorothiazide, 12.5 mg added after 2 months if BP targets not reached
