Title(s)
Glyceryl trinitrate vs. control, and continuing vs. stopping temporarily prior antihypertensive therapy, in acute stroke: rationale and design of the Efficacy of Nitric Oxide in Stroke (ENOS) trial (ISRCTN99414122)
Reference(s)
Int J Stroke 2006;1:245–9
Disease
Stroke
Purpose
To test the safety and efficacy of transdermal glyceryl trinitrate, and of continuing or stopping temporarily prior antihypertensive medication, in patients with acute ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke
Study design
Randomised, single-blind, parallel-group, partial-factorial
Follow-up
Aim 90 days
Patients
Aim 5000 patients with acute ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke, of whom it is assumed approximately 2500 will be taking antihypertensive therapy immediately before stroke
Treatment regimen
Glyceryl trinitrate patch, 5 mg/day, or no patch, within 48 h of stroke onset and for 7 days, or until discharge if earlier
Concomitant therapy
Patients taking pre-stroke antihypertensive therapy will be randomised to continue or stop this temporarily
