Disease |

Purpose |
To test the safety and efficacy of transdermal glyceryl trinitrate, and of continuing or stopping temporarily prior antihypertensive medication, in patients with acute ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke |
Study design |
Randomised, single-blind, parallel-group, partial-factorial |
Follow-up |
Aim 90 days |
Patients |
Aim 5000 patients with acute ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke, of whom it is assumed approximately 2500 will be taking antihypertensive therapy immediately before stroke |
Treatment regimen |
Glyceryl trinitrate patch, 5 mg/day, or no patch, within 48 h of stroke onset and for 7 days, or until discharge if earlier |
Concomitant therapy |
Patients taking pre-stroke antihypertensive therapy will be randomised to continue or stop this temporarily |
