Purpose
To compare the medical management of very old patients with congestive heart failure to that of younger patients and to compare an intensified approach vs a standard treatment
Study design
Randomised, single-blind, 2 × 2 factorial
Follow-up
Aim 18 months
Patients
Aim 824 patients, aged 60–74 or ≥ 75 years, with symptomatic congestive heart failure, hospitalised within the past year and with elevated N-terminal brain natriuretic peptide
Treatment regimen
Standard medical treatment, to reduce symptoms to NYHA class ≤ II, or intensified treatment, to additionally reduce N-terminal brain natriuretic peptide levels to below twice the upper limit of normal
