To determine whether olmesartan can prevent or delay the onset of microalbuminuria and whether this translates into cardiovascular and renal protection in patients with type 2 diabetes
Study design
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group

Aim median 5 years
Patients
Aim 4400 patients, aged 18–75 years with type 2 diabetes and no microalbuminuria, HbA1c ≥ 6.5% or receiving treatment for diabetes and at least one cardiovascular risk factor
Treatment regimen
Olmesartan medoxomil, 40mg/day, or placebo
