Patients
10,044 subjects (5024 rural, 5020 urban), aged 40–69 years
Results
A total of 26.1% were classed as having metabolic syndrome. Age- and sex-adjusted prevalence of metabolic syndrome was significantly higher in the rural population than in the urban community (29.3% vs 22.3%; p < 0.01). Major components of the metabolic syndrome were abdominal obesity (46.9%) and high blood pressure (45.2%) in the rural community, and hypertriglyceridaemia (37.6%) and low HDL cholesterolaemia (37.0%) in the urban community.
