Aim 1402 patients, aged ≥ 40 years, with a recent episode of atrial fibrillation |

Valsartan, 80 mg/day, titrated to 320 mg/day, or placebo |

Prescribed treatments for atrial fibrillation including ACE inhibitors, amiodarone and beta-blockers at the discretion of the physician |
