Purpose
To assess whether the addition of valsartan to best recommended therapy can reduce atrial fibrillation recurrence in patients with a recent history of atrial fibrillation and underlying cardiovascular disease or comorbidities
Study design
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled
Follow-up
Aim 12 months
Patients
Aim 1402 patients, aged ≥ 40 years, with a recent episode of atrial fibrillation
Treatment regimen
Valsartan, 80 mg/day, titrated to 320 mg/day, or placebo
Concomitant therapy
Prescribed treatments for atrial fibrillation including ACE inhibitors, amiodarone and beta-blockers at the discretion of the physician
