Purpose
To evaluate the efficacy of ASA in the primary prevention of major cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes
Study design
Randomised, open, blinded-endpoint
Follow-up
515 first cardiovascular events (expected 5 years)
Patients
Aim 5170 patients, aged ≥ 50 years, with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, already treated with or candidate for treatment with statins, LDL cholesterol ≥ 100 mg/dl and no clinical evidence of cardiovascular disease
Treatment regimen
ASA, 100 mg/day, plus simvastatin, starting dose 20 mg/day, or simvastatin alone, starting dose 20 mg/day. Simvastatin may be increased to 40 mg/day if LDL cholesterol ≥ 100 mg/dl after 3 months
