Disease |
Hypertension |
Purpose |
To compare the incidence of cardiovascular events between two target SBP levels (< 140 mm Hg and < 150 mm Hg) under treatment with valsartan as initial therapy in elderly patients with isolated systolic hypertension |
Study design |
Randomised, open, parallel-group |
Follow-up |
Aim at least 2 years |
Patients |
Aim 3000 patients, aged > 70 and < 85 years, with SBP ≥ 160 mm Hg and DBP < 90 mm Hg that is untreated or being treated with another therapy that can be switched to valsartan
Treatment regimen |
Valsartan, 40–80 mg/day, to target SBP < 140 mm Hg or < 150 mm Hg, increased up to 160 mg/day if target BP not achieved within 1–2 months |
Concomitant therapy |
Other antihypertensive agents, except other angiotensin-receptor blockers, may be added if valsartan alone is inadequate |
