Author(s)

Title(s)
Telmisartan Effectiveness on Left ventricular MAss Reduction (TELMAR) as assessed by magnetic resonance imaging in patients with mild-to-moderate hypertension – a prospective, randomised, double-blind comparison of telmisartan with metoprolol over a period of six months – rationale and study design
Reference(s)
J Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone Syst 2003;4:234–43
Disease
Hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy
Purpose
To compare the effect of telmisartan to that of metoprolol on left ventricular mass index in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy
Study design
Randomised, double-blind, parallel-group
Follow-up
Aim 6.5 months
Patients
Aim 140 patients, aged 18–80 years, with mild to moderate hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy documented by magnetic resonance imaging
Treatment regimen
Telmisartan, 40 mg/day for 2 weeks, then 80 mg/day for 5.5 months, then 40 mg/day for 2 weeks, or metoprolol, 47.5 mg/day for 2 weeks, then 95 mg/day for 5.5 months, then 47.5 mg/day for 2 weeks
