To compare the effects of maintaining SBP < 140 mm Hg vs SBP 140–160 mm Hg in elderly patients with hypertension

4320 patients (2165 target SBP < 140 mm Hg, 2155 target SBP 140–160 mm Hg), aged 65–85 years, with SBP ≥ 160 mm Hg and DBP < 120 mm Hg
Treatment regimen
Efonidipine, 20–40 mg/day, increased to 60 mg/day or bid if needed to reach target SBP
Concomitant therapy
Other antihypertensive drugs (except calcium antagonists)
