Aim 600 patients, with creatinine clearance 15-35 ml/min and Hb 11-12.5 g/dl, not yet on renal replacement therapy

Treatment regimen |
Early intervention arm: epoetin beta, initiated when Hb 11-12.5 g/dl, then titrated to maintain Hb 13-15 g/d
Late intervention arm: epoetin beta, initiated when Hb < 10.5, then titrated to maintain Hb 10.5-11.5 g/dl
