Title(s)
Rationale, background, and design of the Randomized Angiotensin receptor antagonist - Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor Study (RAAS)
Reference(s)
Am J Cardiol 1996;78:1129-31
Disease
Heart failure with left ventricular systolic dysfunction
Purpose
To test the hypothesis that the addition of an angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker (losartan) to an ACE inhibitor (enalapril) will provide better blockade of activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in patients with heart failure and left ventricular systolic dysfunction, and to assess the safety of this therapy
Study design
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, double-dummy
Follow-up
6-48 weeks
Patients
Aim 120 patients (3 treatment groups of 40 patients each) with heart failure and left ventricular systolic dysfunction
Treatment regimen
Enalapril, 10 mg bid, plus either one of enalapril, 2.5-10 mg bid, losartan, 12.5-50 mg, or placebo
