Purpose
To determine whether lipid-lowering therapy reduces the combined incidence of death due to coronary artery disease and nonfatal Ml in men with established coronary artery disease, low levels of HDL cholesterol and satisfactory levels of LDL cholesterol

Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled
Follow-up
5-7 years
Patients
2500 men, aged ≤ 73 years, with coronary artery disease, HDL cholesterol ≤ 40 mg/dl, LDL cholesterol ≤ 140 mg/dl and triglycerides ≤ 300 mg/dl
Treatment regimen
Gemfibrozil, 1200 mg once daily, or placebo
Concomitant therapy
Health counselling and the American Heart Association Step 1 diet
