Purpose
To test whether 15 years of antihypertensive treatment reduces the incidence of Ml with both older and newer drug groups and whether antithrombotic therapy can reduce the incidence of coronary artery disease irrespective of blood pressure control

Aim 5000 hypertensive patients
Treatment regimen
Either alpha-blockade, or beta-blockade, or ACE inhibitors, or diuretics, or no treatment (patients with DBP < 100 mm Hg, or aged < 45 years and DPB < 110 mm Hg). Secondary randomisation to Maxepa, or aspirin, or no treatment
Concomitant therapy
A calcium antagonist if required
