To assess the effect of intensive lipid-lowering therapy with statins in patients with acute coronary syndromes

Aim 2–5 years
Patients
Aim 1600 patients, aged 18–80 years, hospitalised for AMI or unstable angina pectoris, clinically stable for 24 h, with LDL cholesterol < 140 mg/dl and not taking atorvastatin > 10 mg/day (or equivalent dose of other statins)
Treatment regimen
Atorvastatin, 20–40 mg/day, or equivalent dose of other statins (intensive therapy), or atorvastatin, 10 mg/day, or equivalent dose of other statins (standard therapy)
Concomitant therapy
Dietary counselling
