Disease |
Atherosclerosis |
Purpose |
To determine the effectiveness of ASA in preventing cardiovascular events in patients with a low ankle brachial index |
Study design |
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled |
Follow-up |
Mean 8.2 ± 1.6 years |
Patients |
3350 patients (1675 ASA, 1675 placebo), 72% women, aged 50–75 years, with an ankle brachial index ≤ 0.95 and no history of vascular disease |
Treatment regimen |
ASA, 100 mg once daily, or placebo |
Results |
There was no significant difference between the groups in the incidence of the primary composite endpoint of initial fatal or nonfatal coronary event, stroke or revascularisation (13.7 events per 1000 person-years in the ASA group vs 13.3 events per 1000 person-years in the placebo group, hazard ratio 1.03, 95% CI 0.84–1.27 |
Comments |
The trial was stopped 14 months early because of the improbability of finding a difference in the primary endpoint by the end date and an increase in major bleeding in the ASA group |
