To test whether melatonin reduces infarct size and improves clinical outcome when given as an adjunct to reperfusion treatment in patients with AMI

Patients
Aim 272 patients (136 melatonin, 136 placebo), aged 18–75 years, experiencing continuous ischaemic symptoms for at least 20 min, with onset of symptoms of qualifying AMI within the past 6 h, expected to undergo primary angioplasty and acute ST-segment elevation

Melatonin, 11.61 mg iv, or placebo
